Sri Lanka, with a population of 21 million people, derives more than 50% of its primary energy needs from hydro power, 2,800 MW as of 2012. Sri Lanka’s economy is growing fast. To reduce its reliance on imported fossil fuels, achieve energy security and meet its Millennium Development Goals, the government of Sri Lanka has put in place strong incentives for the private sector. These are designed to attract investment to the renewable energy sector.
Biomass energy generation has just begun and could provide more than 4,000 MW of power.
